Environmental and social information

- Environmental information: Ronel Jordaan is inspired by nature, and she also seeks that the processes implemented in her workshop maintain a perfect harmony with the natural environment. Her commitment to the environment is reflected in many aspects of the manufacturing process. The wastewater is re-used in orchards of organic food production installed on the roof of the building. The vegetables obtained from the orchard are distributed among the workers. The soap, essential in the treatment of the wool, is locally produced and fully biodegradable. The dyes are selected specifically to ensure that they are lead-free and meet the environmental requirements of the European Union. The wool is not subjected to a carbonization process (a bath of hydrochloric acid and other chemicals to clean the material). This not only ensures a smoother fabric, but also helps avoid the use of environmentally damaging products.

- Social information: Ronel Jordaan has placed training and job creation as a priority in her business model. To date, forty previously unemployed women aged between 19 and 40 have been formed to become artisans of the felt with international recognition. Ronel is also working with groups of local artisans, as a cooperative of women in Western Cape, and has worked with the NGO Aid to Artisans in product development for four groups of textile artisans in Lesotho.

About the designer: Ronel Jordaan

In 2004, Ronel Jordaan, having been a textile designer for 26 years, began researching the possibilities of using felt as a creative medium. Entirely self taught and following her own creative instincts, she began to turn fine gossamer thread into robust felted forms. By patiently rubbing and coaxing threads of pure wool into shapes in nature that inspire her, she found her direction and started a small home industry. Next she trained a handful of women to help her. Recognized for their originality and design uniqueness, her creations found an immediate market. Within a year she sought bigger premises and a year after that she needed to expand further. She has applied the felting process to create a panoply of textures and shapes, of leaves and flowers, webs, thorns, hides and bark.
